The first embedded PLDs in the industry are Altera's FLEX 10K devices. The Flexible Logic Element MatriX (FLEX) architecture, which is based on reconfigurable CMOS SRAM components, includes all the capabilities required to achieve common gate array megafunctions. The FLEX 10K series offers the density, speed, and features needed to combine whole systems, including multiple 32-bit buses, into a single device, with up to 250,000 gates.
Since FLEX 10K devices are programmable, 100% testing is possible before shipping. Therefore, the designer is not obliged to produce test vectors for the purpose of fault coverage. Additionally, because FLEX 10K devices can be adjusted on the board for the precise functionality needed, the designer is not required to keep track of inventories of various ASIC designs.
